The Return of Uncle Arthur

This was Canning's third play for radio, broadcast by BBC Radio 4 on 21 September 1983, repeated 11 July 1984.

John and Nancy Dingwall shared their house with Uncle Arthur, who has now died. They receive a visit from his solicitor, Miss Appleton, who tells them they will inherit his money only if they listen to four tape recordings he has made and carry out the tasks he has set in each of them. These involve visiting their grandparents' grave, entertaining a neighbour, doing some gardening, and doing without TV for a week, as well as tracking down the sources of some poetry he quotes.
The whole play is a rather sentimental essay on the pace and barrenness of modern life.
