Short Story (1,430 words)

This is the first of five stories Canning contributed to the long-running series "Did it Happen?" in the Evening Standard and its sister papers. Readers had to guess if a story was fact or fiction. In this case the story was fiction.

Canning describes a voyage on a transatlantic liner during which he rescues a girl from suicide and hears her story. But is he the only one to be told?

Canning's other contributions to the series were "Wall of Death", "Two Good Men", "You are a spy" and "Hole in One".
